Andy Beattie was born in August 1913, and played for Preston North End either side of the Second World War. During the war years he guested for both Forest and Notts County along with several other clubs. He was a Scottish international and won 12 caps.

When his playing career ended he took up the manager/secretary postion for Barrow before moving on to spells at Stockport, Huddersfield and Carlisle.

During this time he also had two periods in charge of the Scottish national side, taking them to the World Cup Finals in 1954 and a brief second period in charge between March 1959 and October 1960.

Beattie joined Forest in September 1960 and it was his commitments to his new club that forced him to resign from the Scottish national job.

He had a poor start at Forest and lost his first seven games in charge but things did improve slighty and by the end of his final season he had managed to get Forest into 9th position in Divison One.

After leaving Forest he continued his nomadic career as manager of Plymouth Argyle and Wolves; then he took the imressive sounding job of professional advisor and general manager with Notts County; general manager at Sheffield United, and scouting jobs for several clubs, including Liverpool, Walsall, Brentford, Wolves and Notts County.

Beattie died in 1983, aged 70.
