MOTM Paul Anderson

Portsmouth 2 - 1 Forest

The usual failures at both ends continue to hold us back and mid-table looks like the limit of Forest's ambitions this season. Whilst playing well in spells we're incapable of taking the few chances that come our way, whilst at the other end,  basic defending errors cost us badly. Same old story which sees our away form so bad that even the word 'inconsistent' just doesn't sum up the failings on our travels.

We should have scored early, with Majewski releasing McGugan, who hit the keeper with the first effort and then somehow cut inside and put the follow-up wide. The game remained even until we conceded a corner and allowed their towering centre back a free header from close range that he was never going to miss. To our credit, we responded very well and thoroughly deserved the equaliser through a nice passing move, McGugan's cross and Anderson's diving header into the bottom corner.

For the rest of the half, Portsmouth couldn't live with our quick, incisive passing in midfield and movement off the ball. Makewski finally got involved in the game and was at the heart of everything we created. However, a lack of quality in the final third and some poor finishing, especially an air shot from McGugan left us only level at half time.

The decision to start without Bertrand was a strange one regardless of the previous 2 victories. Up against a pacey winger and considering that Bertrand has been our most consistent player this season, it was a very strange choice. He provides natural width to the left hand side and the perfect foil for Gunter's similar qualities down the right.

Despite this selection is was all going pretty well until half time but then another strange change. Having played pretty well and caused Portsmouth numerous problems, for some reason we switched Gunter and Chambers around and never looked the same. For all of Chamber's efforts he's never going to be a left back at this level and asking him to switch half way through a game was unlikely to make any positive difference.

There was only one team who looked like scoring for the next thirty minutes and it was only a matter of when they would score. Finally the break through came after McGugan didn't challenge properly on the edge of the area. The resulting cross wasn't dealt with cleanly and Camp was beaten by the powerful low shot.

It wasn't until Earnshaw and Blackstock joined the game that we started to impose ourselves. Pushing men forward we created  chances but still left ourselves exposed at the back. Camp made a number of smart saves to keep us in the game but at the other end we created enough to have earned a point. Blackstock's turn and shot needed a decent save whilst Chambers missed yet another free header from six yards following Cohen's pinpoint free kick.

Very few decent performances over the ninety minutes to warrant any mention. McGoldrick and Majewksi barely figured apart from a decent spell before half time. Morgan looks a shadow of the dominating centre back from last season. Wilson continues to impress on his return from the side and should be re-instated permanently. MOTM Anderson took his goal very well, was one of the few to perform on the day and was very unlucky to get replaced as we chased the equaliser. The substitutes added some badly needed quality in the final third but it all looked a little desperate.
